
Kai (Albert) Zhang is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Theory at the School of Government, Peking University, where he also earned his B.A. in Politics and Administration.
His research focuses on Western and Chinese intellectual history as well as their intersections. He is primarily concerned with Alexis de Tocqueville’s insights into the relationship between religion and liberty within the broader tradition of French liberalism. He is also currently investigating the questions of state integration and the reception of Western ideas in modern Chinese political thought, with a particular emphasis on the works of Liang Qichao 梁启超.
His previous publications explore the themes such as colonial expansion and race in Tocqueville’s political thought, as well as the concept of empire in the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli.
