Kristine Li is a China Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ash Center of Harvard Kennedy School. Her research focuses on the political economy of development, local governance, and state-society relations with a regional focus on China. Her main research focuses on studying subnational variations in market resilience in China under economic central planning. In particular, building on theories of deliberative governance and market development, she combines local archival documents, in-depth interviews, and historical statistical data to trace and analyze the impacts of subnational deliberative bureaucracy on market formation and market development during China’s planned era. Her research sheds light on our understanding of the source and historical foundation of China’s market reforms and development. It also enhances our understanding of the institutional foundation of the modern market more broadly. She holds an M.A. in East Asian studies from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in political science from Brown University. Before joining the Ash Center, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Brown University.
