From co-founding the first Indonesia-focused private equity firm to becoming Indonesia’s Trade and Investment Minister, Tom Lembong has come a long way since he got his A.B. from Harvard University in 1994. Lembong shared his experiences from Wall Street and Indonesia’s private sector to serving in Indonesia’s public sector — what he calls “profitocracy” to bureaucracy. He discussed Indonesia’s growing importance in the global community and economy as well as shared his thoughts on how Indonesia’s democracy can best navigate the potential economic storms ahead. This conversation was moderated by Jay Rosengard, faculty chair of the HKS Indonesia Program.
