The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, a research center at the Harvard Kennedy School today announced the appointment of former Indonesian Finance Minister Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri, as senior fellow.
“Dr. Basri brings to the Ash Center a wealth of experience managing growth and attracting foreign investment into one of Asia’s most dynamic and emerging economies,” said Jay Rosengard, Lecturer in Public Policy and Director of the HKS Indonesia Program. “Our students and the research community here at Harvard will benefit tremendously by Dr. Basri’s appointment,” added Rosengard.
While resident at the Ash Center, Dr. Basri will be working on a paper based on his experience as Indonesia’s Minister of Finance managing the country’s economy during the U.S. Federal Reserve’s 2013 tapering of its quantitative easing efforts. “Together with India, Indonesia was able to manage the situation and escaped the fate of the so-called ‘Fragile five,’” said Dr. Basri, referring to other developing countries whose economies ultimately proved over reliant on short-term foreign investment to paper over current account deficits. “This paper is quite relevant to the emerging economies, especially in anticipating the possibility of the normalization of monetary policy in the U.S.,” said Dr. Basri.
